i've been skimming through klk (<- making a ryumako comp bc the one i loved so dearly seems to have vanished from youtube </3) and i'm kinda noticing that satsuki spends a lot of time early on (think eps 1-3) dismissing ryuko, specifically denying her answers to her questions, specifically because she lacks ambition, drive, and purpose. you can't know whether or not it was me who killed your father because you don't even know what you're going to do with that information. you have no plan, you're directionless, so i see no point in it.

and i never really thought of it beyond haha classic satsuki but i think it's more [SPOILERS:] that she doesn't need half-hearted or unpredictable (read: uncontrollable) allies.

if ryuko doesn't know what she's trying to do, what she really wants out of her revenge quest against (ultimately) revocs, then she'd probably be more of a liability than anything in her plans to betray ragyo. satsuki's been lying in wait for basically her entire life. the allies she has are ones she knows she can trust completely, and who trust her completely, and ones she knows would do anything she asked in a heartbeat. and when she took each of them in, it was to redirect their passions to something greater, to her cause. they each wanted to win something for themselves through a challenge, generally glory, respect, etc. gamagori's perhaps the one exception, in that he wanted to protect others. their causes were largely self-centered/small-scale, and satsuki convinced them to join a massive endeavor because she recognized they had the potential in skill, ambition, and strength of character to support her. they wanted to move up or fight an endless cause. so when she says ryuko has no ambition, it's because ryuko has no plan, nowhere to go once this singular challenge is fulfilled. it stems from no ideological base, nor any desire for self improvement. she's a wild card, and satsuki has no time for that. but ofc with time her persistence and solidifying purpose make themselves known to satsuki, and she becomes a more viable ally/pawn, though much like nudist beach i don't think she trusts her because she can't directly control her. she's put her whole life into taking down ragyo, so she needs it to go perfectly because 1) if it's her life's ambition, she obviously takes it seriously 2) she's scared of ragyo/aware of how strong she and the life fibers are, and how difficult that fight will be. it's not just a matter of commitment, it's a matter of letting her move them around like she wants/needs. they only start fully, officially cooperating post-junketsu-ryuko, if i remember correctly, and that's after both the sister reveal and satsuki's admission that she was wrong to use people like pawns (the controlling and moving around thing). the only way she's able to let ryuko into her taking down ragyo team is by accepting that people are different and not controllable, and that she's just going to have to trust ryuko's methods and purpose and whatever
